Shalimar by Guerlain
An icon and a reference in perfumery
THE PERFUME
Guerlain, 1925, Jacques Guerlain.
Inspired by the passionate love story between an emperor and an Indian princess, Shalimar, which means "temple of love" in Sanskrit, symbolizes the promise of eternal love. It is a fragrance of desire. With its passionate and slightly insolent character, this emblematic oriental fragrance in the history of perfumery embodies the sensuality of caress with a touch of the forbidden. "To wear Shalimar is to be dominated by the senses," said Jacques Guerlain.
In 1925, the Shalimar bottle designed by Raymond Guerlain won first prize at the Paris Decorative Arts Exhibition. Its curves were inspired by the ponds of the famous Shalimar Gardens. The fan-shaped stopper in transparent sapphire tone evokes the perpetual flow of water in these gardens.
NOTES
Bergamot, Lemon, Mandarin, Rosemary, Iris, Jasmine, Rose, Patchouli, Vetiver, Vanilla, Opoponax, Tonka bean, Frankincense, Sandalwood, Musk, Civet, Ambergris, Leather, Coumarin, Peru balsam.
REVIEW
Shalimar is a perfume that excites, since it's one of those perfumes that tells a story while living on your skin. From its fleeting citrus opening with slight green nuances, passing through its smoky, animalic and heavy heart conformed by civet, semi sweet leather and powdery iris paired with incense till its deep base where a sweet vanilla perfectly balanced by the leather and the smoke dances with the creamy tonka that here acquires a resinous vibe.
Perfume of perfect contrasts between dark and bright, cold and warm, strong and delicate, feminine and masculine.

Four centuries ago, in India, Emperor Shah Jahan fell head over heels in love with Princess Mumtaz Mahal. He had the splendid Gardens of Shalimar built for her, and later dedicated the Taj Mahal, one of the new seven wonders of the world. This incredible story inspired the imagination of Jacques Guerlain, who in 1925 created Shalimar, the first oriental perfume.

Jacques Guerlain dared to use an incredibly sweet new molecule, ethyl vanillin, combined with the Jicky chord. Fascinated by this delightfully sensual creation he worked on day and night, he found he was paving the way for a "little revolution" - the first genuinely oriental fragrance.
