BOHEMIAN LIME BY GOLDFIELD AND BANKS

An enchanting fragrance that treasures a tremendous smoothness and a little portion of Australia's soul in it

Cape Byron is Australia's most easterly point, 153° 39´ east, located on the north coast of New South Wales (see map of Australia below). With its numerous beaches, unspoilt hinterland, and relaxed lifestyle, Byron Bay is a popular tourist destination.

Byron Bay is located just off the Pacific Highway, 800kms north of Sydney, 175kms south of Brisbane.

The light that shines by night over Cape Byron Marine Park emanates from a tower as famous as the town of Byron Bay itself.
Built at the turn of the 19th century to protect ships passing along the coast, Cape Byron Lighthouse stands resolute on the most easterly point of the Australian mainland. Operated by resident keepers until 1989, its now automated light is clearly visible from Byron Bay township. You’ll enjoy some of the best views of the ocean and hinterland on the entire coast, including regular sightings of turtles, dolphins and humpback whales.

With many National Parks and Reserves Byron Bay treasures an amazing flora and fauna with all its richness and it's also famous because of that. Arakwal National Park , Broken Head Nature Reserve , Wollumbin National Park or Nightcap National Park are some of their exponents.

In those natural reserves grows the Citrus Australasica, the Australian finger lime or caviar lime which is a thorny understorey shrub or small tree of lowland subtropical rainforest and rainforest in the coastal border region of Queensland and New South Wales, Australia.

It has edible fruits which are under development as a commercial crop. According to the Swingle system it is not part of the genus Citrus, but in a related genus Microcitrus.
Early settlers and Natives consumed the fruit and retained the trees when clearing for agriculture. Colonial botanists suggested that they should be cultivated.

The finger lime has been recently popularised as a gourmet bushfood. The globular juice vesicles (also known as pearls) have been likened to a "lime caviar", which can be used as a garnish or added to various recipes. The fresh vesicles have the effect of a burst of effervescent tangy flavour as they are chewed. The fruit juice is acidic and similar to that of a lime. Marmalade and pickles are also made from finger lime. The finger lime peel can be dried and used as a flavouring spice.

Commercial use of finger lime fruit started in the mid-1990s in boutique marmalades made from wild harvested fruit. By 2000 the finger lime was being sold in restaurants, including the export of fresh fruit.

The finger lime has been recently grown on a commercial basis in Australia in response to high demand for the fruit. There is an increasing range of genetic selections which are budded onto citrus rootstock. With the sudden high market demand for the fruit the primary source of genetic material for propagation has been selections from wild stock.
